TNG in Harrington Street, in Liverpool, is helping to tackle unemployment in the area having helped move 212 people in 12 months off benefits and into employment.
TNG is a national welfare to work training provider. One person who has benefitted from TNG’s help is Kevin McGuire, 26, from Childwall.
Kevin was on probation for actual bodily harm and breach of community service. Although he had made mistakes when he was younger, Kevin was now keen to turn his life around, and create a future for himself.
Kevin searched for employment, but having a criminal record made it almost impossible to even get an interview. Desperate to put the past behind him, Kevin enrolled with TNG for help.
TNG helped Kevin to improve his CV, and write application letters. Kevin was nervous about potential interviews, so TNG tutors worked with him on interview techniques to ensure he was fully prepared. To help him gain practical qualifications, TNG also arranged for Kevin to take a fork lift truck test, which he passed.
Having been out of work for couple of years, TNG found Kevin a work placement at a local branch of a national supermarket. Eager to make the most of the opportunity, Kevin threw himself into the placement. His hard work and positive attitude impressed his manager, and Kevin was offered a permanent job.
Kevin has continued to work hard, and within a month was promoted to Home Delivery Co-ordinator. He said said, “I really wanted to get my life back on track, and TNG helped me to make a new start. I was struggling to find work, but TNG believed in me, and thanks to my tutors, I have a new job, and the start of a new career.”
Jane Brade, TNG Regional Manager in Merseyside, said, “Kevin is a good example of the work TNG does in Liverpool. He wanted to work, but was concerned his criminal record was holding him back. We supported him back into employment through mentoring, CV preparation and work placements. His positive attitude and dedication led to a promotion, and I am sure he will be a great success.” |
