TNG has a Splashing Time for Comic Relief
Friday, 01 April 2011 09:26

TNG, a national welfare to work training organisation helping people from benefits into employment, based in Price Street, in Birkenhead, raised £240 for Comic Relief through a combination of dressing up, sponsored leg waxing and going in the stocks to be pelted with water.

TNG staff knew they wanted to do 'something funny for money' but when all suggestions involved humiliation, pain, or both... they decided to do them all! Tutor Tony McKie got a double dose, with a sponsored leg wax and being put in the stocks. TNG Tutors Julian Coates and Pauline Carney Broster swapped outfits for the day, and became 'Juliette' and ‘Paul’. Kim Ormston, an administrator at the office went to work dressed as a zombie, while Placement Officer Casey Coggan joined Tony in the stocks. Other staff members donated money to the charity in order to wear casual clothes for the day.

When it looked like the office couldn’t get hold of stocks, the job seekers on TNG employment programmes saved the day by making some. TNG’s Development Centre, in the Odyssey Centre in Corporation Road, provides an opportunity for individuals to gain experience, brush up on existing skills, and develop new skills such as plastering, tiling, painting and decorating, joinery and brickwork under the supervision of a TNG tutor, while looking for work. When the customers heard they might miss out on the opportunity to throw wet sponges at their tutors, they sprung into action, knocking up some stocks.

Debbie Blackley, Business Manager, at TNG, said, "I am really pleased that we were able to raise money for such a good cause. The support of our volunteers at the Development Centre was essential to the success of the day as without their expertise to craft the stocks, Tony and Casey would have been able to dodge the wet sponges, and we couldn’t have that! Although it is a very serious charity, we all had a fun fund-raising day."
