Male lone parent of three comes off benefits with the help of TNG
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:44

Neil Powell, 32, from Liverpool, was unemployed for two years before joining TNG's Lone Parent Programme, which focuses on supporting lone parents through the difficult transaction of going back to work.

Neil became the full time carer to his three children, a boy aged 3, and two girls aged 10 and 14, following the breakdown of his relationship. He loves being a full time parent but wanted to get back into the job market, although he lacked the confidence and motivation to do it alone.

He turned to TNG, one of the UK's largest training providers for help. Neil discussed all his options with his personal adviser at TNG and identified an opportunity for a placement at a local estate agent. At the same time, Neil decided to add to his qualifications by embarking on an NVQ in Business Administration. Throughout his time on placement, Neil was dedicated and reliable and when a vacancy came up at his placement he was encouraged to apply. He was successful in securing the job, and is enjoying being back at work whilst caring for his children.

Commenting on the help he received from TNG, Neil said: "Having access to TNG has literally changed my life. I'm now able to financially provide for my children, which is important to me. As a single parent, it was hard to see my way out of the cycle I was in, but with the help of my TNG adviser, I was able to build on my skill base and confidence resulting on my successful employment. I will be forever grateful."

Commenting on Neil's achievements, Michelle Douglas, Business Manager at TNG, added: "When Neil joined TNG, he was despondent about the likelihood of finding employment to fit around his childcare. We were able to organise a placement for him, which demonstrated that he was able to juggle work and home life, whilst adding to his existing skills. The NVQ in Business Administration was integral to his confidence building, and made him believe that he was capable of finding employment. I'm delighted that he’s enjoying his new job and that he’s managed to turn his life around."
