Robert, 28, had spent time doing voluntary work at a local charity shop while searching for a job with little success. He enjoyed working in retail and was pleased to be gaining experience, but was keen to move into paid employment.
After a year of being unemployed, he was referred to TNG on the Flexible New Deal programme for help with finding a job.
During his initial visit to TNG, Robert discussed his options with his adviser, Margaret. He expressed an interest in a career in retail and he worked with Margaret to update his CV. TNG contacted the local branch of a national supermarket on Robert's behalf who mentioned that they may have an upcoming vacancy available on the shop floor. Robert completed four weeks of Mandatory Work Related Activity (a required element of the FND programme) at the supermarket and impressed them with his dedicated attitude and enthusiasm for work. At the end of the four weeks, they were happy to offer him a full time position which Robert gladly accepted.
The offer of employment boosted Robert's confidence immensely and provided him with further experience to add to his CV. He was keen to progress his career in retail and with some valuable, and recent, experience to show on his CV, he was actually successful in securing a new retail position at a local firm in Northallerton. He is thrilled to have gained a job in his chosen industry and feels that the initial four week placement was the key to securing work, as it improved his confidence and enabled him to gain experience and contacts in the industry. "Without the help of TNG, I would still be unemployed. Al the staff at the Darlington branch were friendly and helpful."
