Building a successful future
05 March 2008

Joanne Hughes, 49, from Stockport, has successfully become a construction worker despite growing up being told that she would always be a failure.

Having left school without any qualifications, Joanne had always lacked confidence but wanted to make some important changes in her life. Joanne was unemployed for 3 years+ and her last job was a cleaner.  She went to TNG, one of the UK’s leading providers of training and development, to begin their IAP Basic Skills Programme, which is an intensive activity period to work towards gaining a City & Guilds qualification for Numeracy & Literacy.

Through informal chats and reviews, the reasons for Joanne’s lack of confidence became clear. Her TNG adviser said, “Joanne revealed that she never had anyone to believe in her and throughout her childhood into adulthood was told she wouldn’t amount to much. On the IAP Basic Skills provision course, she started to believe in herself once again”.

Initially, Joanne was shy and inhibited, however she soon began taking part in class and taking extra work home. She worked with her tutors to find a suitable placement to aid getting back to work, and soon she was offered an apprenticeship in the construction industry.

Although it was challenging, she made extra effort to balance her time to enable her to continue working at TNG, as well as attending college and her work placement as part of her apprenticeship. Her hard work did not go unnoticed and she was offered a permanent job.

She has now gained her Entry 3 Numeracy qualification and is awaiting her Level 1 Literacy results. She also passed her CSCS Health & Safety card on her first attempt, which was organised by TNG.  Joanne is continuing to improve and is looking forward to a successful future.

Joanne says, “I finally believe in myself. I’ve achieved more than I ever thought possible. I couldn’t have done it without help from my TNG tutors, they’ve been great. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s all worth it.”

Joanne is proof that with hard work and determination, it is never too late to return to work.
